So to re-cap: in high school games / NFHS rules, if time is being kept at the field, the game is over when the horn or tone sounds, even if the ball is in mid-flight on a shot toward goal. Thanks guys. Good suggestion about asking the timer pre-game to run the clock down to like five seconds and watch / listen to the scoreboard to confirm that the horn or tone is synch'ed with the clock.

    Thanks Chris. We had a chance to discuss this scenario at the 6PM meeting on Oct. 26. It was pointed out that Rule 7, Article 4 states, "A period shall end at the expiration of time." If we are to be consistent, then "expiration of time" is defined as when the horn or tone sounds.

    Correct, time can not be extended to "complete the play", as many teams expect.

    Another scenario related that requires astute officiating... just as the official whistles, signals to stop clock and points to the spot for PK...the horn or tone sounds expiration of time...The exception to article 4, states "Play shall be extended beyond the expiration of a period, in regulation time and overtime, to permit a penalty kick to be completed." Key to note that the whistle of foul occurred before the horn sounds...thus allowing PK to be taken. See also 14.1.6 Situation for PK for additional information. Thanks.
