Most players are aware that a goal kick requires the ball to leave the penalty area before it is in play, i.e. can be touched by another player. What most players don't know is this also applies to other free kicks taken by the defending team in its penalty area. Rule 13.3.2 clearly states, "If the free kick is awarded to the defending team in its penalty area, the ball is not in play until it is beyond the penalty area and into the field of play. Failure to kick the ball as specified shall result in a rekick." Two examples of this would be restarts following offside violations in the penalty area, and fouls by the attacking team in the penalty area. Note that it doesn't matter if the free kick is indirect or direct, in both cases the ball must leave the penalty area before touched by another player.
