Clarification on offside rule 11-1-4

Offside Rule 11-1-4

Player is offside and penalized if, at the time the ball touches or is played by a teammate, the player is involved in active play and interferes with play or with an opponent or seeks to gain an advantage by being in that position. A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent, who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save), is not considered to have gained an advantage.

Clarification: A "deliberate play" is an action by a defender to attempt to play the ball, and the defender must touch the ball in order for a deliberate play to occur. Conversely, an attempt by a defender to play the ball without touching it does not meet the definition of deliberate play, and an attacking player in offside position receiving the ball from the teammate is penalized for offside.

Review the situations on page 42 and 43 of the rule book to gain a full understanding of the offside rule and its exceptions, including the deliberate save.
